G20ブリスベン・サミットの開催を数日後に控え、地元でも特に人気のある彼らは、世界各国首脳陣への、一世一代の歓迎のご挨拶、抱っこ（？）をこなすために、目下特訓中です。
ブリスベンのローンパイン・コアラ・サンクチュアリにいる100頭以上のコアラたちは、有名人へのおもてなしを良く心得ています。これまでにもロジャー・フェデラー、ジョン・トラボルタ、マライア・キャリー、テイラー・スウィフトなどのセレブとの記念撮影をこなし、今回G20サミットで訪れるオバマ大統領、メルケル首相、プーチン大統領などの各国首脳のお迎えの準備も万全です。
「オーストラリアでコアラの抱っこ、身近で触れ合う体験と言えはクイーンズランド州です。」と語るのはローンパイン・コアラ・サンクチュアリのコアラ飼育員主任のキャレン・ニルソン氏です。「訓練期間中の小さいコアラの場合、1日に抱っこ出来る時間はわずか10分です。訓練を終了する大人のコアラでも1日30分以上は抱っこをさせません。また、3日間抱っこをさせたコアラは休ませるために、抱っこ無しの日を設けてから仕事に復帰させます。」
では、世界の首脳たちに知っておいていただきたいコアラ抱っこのコツは何でしょうか？
「まず第一に、自分が木になったつもりになることです。そうするとコアラもいつもの体勢が出来ます。上手にコアラを抱くには、コアラが落ちないで安心するように、お尻をしっかりと支えてあげてください。」とニルソン氏。「コアラは生活のほとんどが休息と睡眠の時間なので、抱っこの時間も１日最長30分までとして、日常の生活習慣を乱さないようにしています。」
「オーストラリア固有の野生生物との触れ合いは、ぜったいに外せない体験です。」と語るのはローンパイン・コアラ・サンクチュアリのジェネラル・マネージャー、ロバート・フリードラー氏。「皆さんの多くは都市に住んでいて、ネコやイヌの扱いには慣れていますが、動物との触れ合いと言えばその程度ですよね。」「ですから、カンガルーやコアラといった世界で最もかわいい動物たちと間近で触れ合えることが出来れば、本当に忘れられない体験になると思います。」
ローンパイン・コアラ・サンクチュアリを訪れたスウェーデンの大学院生マチルダ・トゥーダーさんの長年の夢がコアラの抱っこでした。「これが初めてのコアラ抱っこだったのですが、本当に感動しました。コアラに会うのがずっと夢だったんです。」「Googleで検索して、YouTubeの動画を見ていて、オーストラリアで絶対にしたいことが、このコアラの抱っこだったんです。」
ドイツ北部の都市リンデンから訪れていたクラサ夫妻は、メルケル首相にはコアラ抱っこをお勧めするとのことです。「メルケル首相、ぜひオーストリアのブリスベンに来て、コアラを抱っこしてください。本当にすばらしい体験です。」とクラサ夫妻のご主人。

“And as little trainees, they don’t do any more than 10 minutes a day, even when they are just being cuddled by me and then, even as an adult they won’t be held for more than half an hour a day and after 3 days they have to have a day off were they are not held at all, so they do spend a limited amount of time being held by people and the main reason for that is obviously people have noticed koalas do spend a lot of time resting and sleeping. So by limiting it to half an hour maximum, we are not interrupting their usual daily routine.”

コアラとは：
- コアラはオーストラリア自生の動物で、東海岸沿いにのみ生息しています。
- クイーンズランド州の野生生物保護区は、コアラ抱っこが出来る、世界でも主要な場所です。
- コアラの主食はユーカリの葉ですが、ユーカリならどの種類も食べるわけではなく、非常に気難しいことで知られています。オーストラリアに育つ600から800種類あると言われるユーカリのうち、コアラが好んで食べるのはわずか50種類ほどです。
- 体格、性別、生息場所などのさまざまな要素にもよりますが、大人のコアラは1日に約500グラムの葉を食べます。
- コアラは一生ずっとユーカリの葉を食べ続ける、と良く言われますが、全く事実ではありません。ユーカリの葉はあまりカロリーが高くなく、コアラは体脂肪を蓄えないので、毎日18－20時間はじっとしているか、寝て過ごします。そのため、エネルギー消費には特に注意を払わなくてはならないのです。
- コアラはとても怠け者である、とも言われますが、そうではなく、低カロリーの食生活にうまく順応しているために、休んでいる時間が長いのです。
- またコアラはほとんどが夜行性であるため、観光客が訪れる昼間はじっとして、眠そうにしているのです。
- コアラは熊類ではなく、有袋類なので、母親のお腹にある袋の中で育てられます。
- コアラの赤ちゃんは英語でジョイ（joey）と言います。生まれた時の大きさはゼリービーンズ程度、0.5グラムほどの体重で、目は見えなく、毛も生えていません。その後およそ6カ月間は、母親の袋の中から出てきません。
- コアラは1920年代から天然記念物として保護されてきました。それ以来、狩猟は禁止され、ペットとして飼うことも出来ません。
