NTA announces the investment in TRIO pharmaceuticals, a drug discovery startup in the US

ライフサイエンス・ヘルスケア領域でグローバル・エンジェル投資を行う株式会社Newsight Tech Angels（本社：東京都中央区日本橋、代表取締役 瀬尾亨、以下「NTA」）は、米国の有望な創薬スタートアップTRIO Pharmaceuticalsへ出資を行いました。

 

[Englilsh follows] 株式会社Newsight Tech Angels（以下「NTA」）は、抗がん剤の開発を進める創薬系スタートアップ TRIO pharmaceuticals, Inc.（本社：米国カリフォルニア州、CEO：Reiner Laus, MD）に対して投資を実行したことをお知らせいたします。今回のTRIO pharmaceuticalsのシードラウンドの資金調達は米国エンジェル投資家シンジケートがリードしており、日本からは唯一NTAが参加しています。
TRIO pharmaceuticalsは、がん領域において近年非常に注目されている抗がん剤、抗体薬物複合体 (ADC; Antibody-drug conjugate) を研究開発する創薬型バイオテック企業です。現在、TRIO pharmaceuticalsではTRIO Body Drug Conjugate™ (TDC)、TRAILBody™という二重特異性抗体を基盤とする２つの異なるプラットフォーム技術を開発しています。TDC™は抗体分子に付加された低分子薬により、またTRIOBody™はTRAIL-Rを介したアポトーシス誘導により、がん細胞に対する殺傷効果をもたらします。加えて、TDC™とTRIOBody™は共に免疫抑制系の細胞に対する殺傷効果も有しており、がん免疫機構のブレーキを外す作用があります。TRIO pharmaceuticalsは、両プラットフォームについてすでに細胞培養を用いたProof of Mechanismデータおよび担がんマウスモデルを用いたin vivo Proof of Conceptデータを保持しています。
NTAは資金提供のみならず、我々が持つ臨床開発やCMC (Chemistry, Manufacturing and Control) 領域での高い専門性を活かし、TRIO Pharmaceuticalsの研究開発に貢献していきます。また、NTAの広いネットワークを活用し、日本の製薬会社の事業開発への橋渡しと今後の資金調達を支援していきます。今回のシードラウンドの調達により、TRIO pharmaceuticalsが臨床試験開始に向けてデータパッケージの強化を進め、やがてはTDC™やTRAILBody™技術を用いた薬剤ががん患者のより良い治療に貢献することを期待します。
NTAからの米国スタートアップへの投資は今回で2件目です。このように米国の優良案件に投資を行えるエンジェル投資家は日本において稀有な存在であり、現在も多くの国内外のスタートアップから投資検討依頼を受けております。NTAのグローバルなネットワークと豊富な経験を通して、引き続き日本のスタートアップの世界進出を支援していき、「国の枠を超えたダイナミックなエコシステム」の構築に貢献していきます。

Newsight Tech Angels Inc. (headquartered in Nihonbashi, Chuo-ku, Tokyo; Toru Seo, CEO; hereinafter "NTA") announces that it has made an investment in TRIO Pharmaceuticals, Inc, (Headquarters: California, U.S.A., CEO: Reiner Laus, MD; hereinafter “TRIO”), a cancer immunotherapeutics startup. The seed round funding for TRIO was led by a syndicate of US angel investors, with NTA as the sole Japanese participant.
TRIO is developing dual targeting antibody and antibody-drug conjugates (ADC), which have attracted much attention in the field of oncology in recent years. TRIO has two different bispecific/dual targeting  antibody-based platform technologies: 1) TRIOBody Drug Conjugate™ (TDC) which provide a cytotoxic effect through small molecule drugs attached to antibody molecules and 2) TRAILBody™, which provide a cytotoxic effect through TRAIL-R-mediated induction of apoptosis. The novelty of these dual targeting platforms is that in addition to eliminating cancer cells they also eliminate immunosuppressor cells, thereby releasing the brakes on immune effector cells to launch an effective anti- tumour immune response. 
NTA will not only provide funding but will also contribute to TRIO's research and development by leveraging our strong expertise in the areas of clinical development and CMC (Chemistry, Manufacturing and Control). In addition, NTA's broad network will be used to help bridge the gap between Japanese pharmaceutical companies and TRIO’s business development and future funding. With this seed round of funding, we expect that TRIO will be able to enhance its data package in preparation for the start of clinical trials and that eventually, drugs based on TDC™ and TRAILBody™ technologies will contribute to better treatment of cancer patients.
This is NTA's second investment in a U.S. startup. NTA is one of the few angel investors in Japan that can invest in such quality projects in the U.S., and we are currently receiving requests from many startups in Japan and overseas to consider investing in them. NTA will continue to support Japanese startups in their global expansion through its global network and rich experience, and contribute to the creation of a dynamic ecosystem that transcends national boundaries.
