ARUN Seed announces the launch of “CSI Challenge 4: Business Competition”

Applications are now open for a business competition aimed at discovering social entrepreneurs who challenge gender inequality with vision and innovations.

Tokyo, Japan - November 7, 2022 - ARUN Seed is pleased to announce the launch of “CSI Challenge 4: Business Competition”.

CSI Challenge 4 (The fourth Cloud Social Investment Program) consists of “Social Business Competition” and “Crowdfunding” to discover and invest in social entrepreneurs who jointly with ARUN, challenge gender inequality with vision and innovations.

The issues of "gender inequality" that are still deeply rooted in our society have become a greater challenge than ever in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic.  Numbers of data indicate larger impacts on female populations, such as job losses, income decline, malnutrition and increase in out of school girls and domestic violence.

In light of this situation, CSI Challenge 4 invites Social entrepreneurs who are addressing the issue of  "gender inequality”.

The winner will receive an investment of up to US$50,000, support and advice from ARUN Seed. The financing comes from a combination of crowdfunding and sponsorship funds.
*Investment amount is subject to change due to the result of crowdfunding, exchange rate and/or investment due diligence.

Deloitte Tohmatsu Group separately provides awards** and the winner(s) receive total grant up to US$25,000.

<About CSI Challenge 4>
CSI Challenge4 is the fourth in a series of initiatives implemented since 2016 to promote social impact investments. In this challenge, through a combination of the Social Enterprise Competition and Crowdfunding, ARUN focuses on identifying and supporting social entrepreneurs who aim to solve social problems through their own innovative businesses. The competition also aims to create a platform to connect entrepreneurs with Japanese firms and supporters.

The final round will be held in January 27, 2023 with the participation of a panel of judges led by Prof. Seiichiro Yonekura, a director of ARUN Seed and a professor emeritus at Hitotsubashi University. The winning entrepreneurs will receive a variety of incubation support, including advice on business models as well as investments necessary for business growth.

CSI Challenge 4 is supported by Deloitte Tohmatsu Group as the main sponsor, and also by Sasakawa Peace Foundation, MS&AD Unison Smile Club, Japan International Cooperation Agency, and individual supporters participating in the crowdfunding.

Eligible applicants
●In order to qualify for CSI Challenge 4, the enterprise must be:
●A company that provides innovative business solutions to address social issues with the aim of achieving social justice.
●Have at least three years’ track record in the field
●Be operating and for a profit-making business
●Incorporated with legal status
●Be providing innovative solutions on gender diversity

 Types of organizations that are NOT eligible to apply:
・Non-profit organization, scholarships, or research projects
・Organization based on political or religious purposes

<取り組みの背景>
新型コロナウイルス感染症は、様々な形で女性に影響を与えています。特に途上国においては、経済、健康、教育面での負の影響が大きく、雇用機会の減少、教育機会の減少、女性と女子に対する暴力の増加などが問題となっています。
例えば、下記のような深刻な数字が、国連や国際協力機構から発表されています。
・新型コロナ危機による男性の平均失業率は3.5%に対し、女性は4.5%
・教育機会を失った女児の数は1,100万人
・家庭内暴力が平均で約30%増加
ジェンダー不平等は、社会に深く根ざした課題の一つでありながら解決されていなかったことが、パンデミックの影響により深刻化しているとも言えます。ARUNは、こうした課題の解決にビジネスで取組む起業家を発掘し、その挑戦を応援し、連帯することを目指します。
<ビジネスコンペティション概要>
ARUNが、社会的インパクトやビジネスの持続可能性などを考慮して起業家のビジネスアイディアを選抜し、投資先を決定するコンペティションです。最終選考会はARUN理事である米倉誠一郎一橋大学名誉教授がチェアを務め、2023年1月末に開催する予定です。
優勝した起業家には、事業成長に必要な投資に加え、ビジネスモデルへの助言や製品・サービス開発へのサポートなど、さまざまなインキュベーションサポートを提供します。

本コンペティションは、国内外の社会起業家によるプレゼンテーションを基に投資先を選抜するビジネスコンペティションと、日本で寄付を呼びかけながら社会的投資を促進するためのプラットフォームづくりを目指すクラウドファンディングから構成される「第４回クラウド・ソーシャル・インベストメント（CSI）チャレンジ」の一環で開催するものです。

*社会的投資は、ビジネスを通じて貧困、雇用、環境などといった社会の様々な問題を解決していけると いう社会的リターン、そして、投資した資金がビジネスの成功により大きな資金になる経済的リターン、 そのどちらも追い求めるという、日本ではまだ例が少ない新しい仕組みです。
このプログラムは、デロイト トーマツ グループをメインスポンサーに、MS&ADゆにぞんスマイルクラブ、、笹川平和財団、みずほ証券のご支援、国際協力機構のご後援、そしてクラウドファンディングによる皆さまからのご支援により運営されています。
優勝者には、クラウドファンディングおよびスポンサー企業様から頂いた資金を原資とした最大5万ドルの投資*を行います。
