【April Dream】米日カウンシルの夢：日米関係の強化に深く関わり、互いの文化や国を理解し、より協調的で繁栄した安全な世界へ貢献する国際的な視点を備えた日米の若いリーダーを育む

当団体は、4月1日を夢を発信する日にしようとするApril Dreamに賛同しています。このプレスリリースは「公益財団法人 米日カウンシル－ジャパン」の夢です。

米国に本部を置く米日カウンシルの日本法人、公益財団法人 米日カウンシル－ジャパン（本部：東京都千代田区、代表理事：オードリー・ヤマモト、以下「米日カウンシル」）は、東日本大震災を機に発足した官民パートナーシップ「TOMODACHIイニシアチブ」を通じて、これまで1万人を超える日米の若きリーダーたちに、人生を変えるような学びと国際交流の機会を提供してきました。

私たちの夢は、このリーダーシッププログラムの機会を、日米両国の若者たちに届けることです。災害からの復興、環境問題、地域創生など、各地が直面する多様な課題に根差したプログラムを展開することで、どこにいても世界とつながり、グローバルな視点と共感力、そしてレジリエンス（回復力）を持って社会に貢献できる次世代リーダーを、国境を越えて育成することを目指します。

【夢の背景】

日米関係及びグローバル社会の未来は、多様な地域で育つ若者たちの双肩にかかっています。日本、米国を問わず、各地には独自の文化や産業がある一方で、自然災害からの復興、地域経済の活性化、持続可能性の確保といった共通の課題も存在します。地域社会の重要性が見直される中、若者が自らの地域に根差しつつ、国際的な経験を通じて多様な価値観に触れ、リーダーシップを発揮する機会を創出することは、より良い世界の実現にとって不可欠です。

【夢の実現に向けた取り組み】

米日カウンシルは、TOMODACHIイニシアチブなどの若者を対象とするプログラムを通じて、すでに国境を越えた地域間の連携や課題解決に焦点を当てた取り組みを進めています。

日本の地域から世界へ： 新潟県と米国テキサス州の大学生が、気候変動というグローバルな課題を踏まえ、農業の未来を共に考える
「TOMODACHI Tanaka Sangyo Agricultural Exchange Initiative」

災害からの復興と学び合い： 甚大な災害を経験した東北とハワイ・マウイ島の高校生が互いの経験から学び、希望とレジリエンスを育む
「TOMODACHI Kibou for Maui Program」

米国の地域と日本の知見をつなぐ：ロサンゼルス・ドジャースおよび米日財団等の支援を受け山火事の影響を受けたカリフォルニア州アルタデナの若者を対象とした「Kibou (希望) for Los Angeles」が発足。東日本大震災の被災地である東北地方への派遣を通じて、レジリエンス、リーダーシップ、コミュニティ再建について学ぶ

これらのプログラムは、国境や地域を越えた若者同士の交流が、相互理解を深め、困難を乗り越える力を与え、未来への希望を育むことを示しています。今後は、これらのモデルを参考に、日米両国の地方自治体、教育機関、企業、NPO等との連携をさらに強化し、より多くの若者が地理的な制約なく、世界に視野を広げ、自らの可能性を最大限に引き出せる環境を創出していきます。

この夢の実現により、日米両国の地域社会が活性化し、グローバルな視野とローカルな行動力を兼ね備えた多様なリーダーが次々と生まれ、人と人との繋がりを基盤とした日米関係がさらに多層的かつ強固になる未来を描いています。

「April Dream」は、4月1日に企業がやがて叶えたい夢を発信する、PR TIMESによるプロジェクトです。私たちはこの夢の実現を本気で目指しています。

【April Dream】Dream of the U.S.-Japan Council: Fostering young leaders from Japan and the U.S. who are deeply involved in strengthening Japan-U.S. relations, understand each other's cultures and countries, and possess an international perspective that contributes to a more cooperative, prosperous, and secure world

Cultivating Leaders Rooted in Their Communities and Connected to the World Across Borders

Our organization supports the April Dream project, which aims to make April 1st a day for sharing dreams. This press release is the dream of the U.S.-Japan Council.

The U.S.-Japan Council (Japan), the Japan-based entity of the U.S.-Japan Council, an organization headquartered in the United States (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, Representative Director: Audrey Yamamoto, hereafter referred to as “U.S.-Japan Council”) has provided life-changing learning and international exchange opportunities to over 10,000 young leaders from Japan and the United States through the TOMODACHI Initiative, a public-private partnership launched in the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Our dream is to bring these leadership programs to young people from various communities across both Japan and the U.S. By offering programs rooted in the diverse challenges faced by different regions, such as disaster recovery, environmental issues, and community development, we aim to create a platform where young leaders can connect with the world, no matter wherever they are. Through this, we strive to nurture the next generation of leaders who possess a global perspective, empathy, and resilience, and contribute to their communities across borders."

【Background of the Dream】
The future of U.S.-Japan relations and the global society rests on the shoulders of young people growing up in diverse regions. Both Japan and the United States have unique cultures and industries, while also facing common challenges such as recovery from natural disasters, revitalization of local economies, and ensuring sustainability. As the importance of local communities is being re-evaluated, creating opportunities for young people to be rooted in their own regions, experience diverse values through international experiences, and demonstrate leadership is essential for realizing a better world.

【Efforts Towards Realizing the Dream】

The U.S.-Japan Council, through the TOMODACHI Initiative and other youth programs, are already advancing initiatives focused on cross-border regional cooperation and problem-solving.

From Local Regions of Japan to the World: University students from Niigata Prefecture and Texas, USA, jointly consider the future of agriculture in light of the global challenge of climate change.
"TOMODACHI Tanaka Sangyo Agricultural Exchange Initiative"

Disaster Recovery and Mutual Learning: High school students from Maui, who experienced a devastating disaster, and TOMODACHI alumni in Tohoku who were affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake, learn from each other's experiences, fostering hope and resilience.

"TOMODACHI Kibou for Maui Program"

Connecting U.S. Regions with Japanese Knowledge: Recently, with the support of the Los Angeles Dodgers and the U.S.-Japan Foundation, "Kibou (Hope) for Los Angeles" was launched for young people in Altadena, California, affected by wildfires. This cross-cultural program involves sending them to the Tohoku region, which was affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake, to learn about resilience, leadership, and community rebuilding.

These programs demonstrate that exchanges between young people across borders and regions deepen mutual understanding, provide the strength to overcome difficulties, and foster hope for the future. Going forward, we will further strengthen collaboration with local governments, educational institutions, businesses, NPOs, etc., in both the U.S. and Japan, using these models as a reference. We will create an environment where more young people can broaden their horizons to the world without geographical limitations and maximize their potential.

By realizing this dream, we envision a future where local communities in both the U.S. and Japan are revitalized, diverse leaders with both global perspectives and local action emerge one after another, and the U.S.-Japan relationship based on human connections becomes even more multifaceted and robust.
