San Diego and Japan Deepen Strategic Ties

Mayor Todd Gloria Leads 40+ Leaders on Japan Trade Mission

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — More than 40 business, civic, and academic leaders will visit Japan September 7–11, 2026, on a trade mission led by San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria and U.S. Congressman Scott Peters. Organized by World Trade Center San Diego (WTCSD), the mission will advance investment, research, and business partnerships in AI, semiconductors, fusion energy, defense and maritime technology, and life sciences.

The visit also marks the 70th anniversary of the San Diego–Yokohama sister-city partnership. Japan is San Diego’s second-largest source of foreign direct investment, with $7.6 billion invested in the region since 2015.

 Mission Highlights 

·    Yokohama: Mayor Gloria will address the Yokohama City Council and meet city leaders.

·    AI and semiconductors: UC San Diego, Qualcomm, ASML, Kyocera, RISE-A, and other partners will discuss chip design, edge AI, manufacturing, and materials.

·    Fusion energy: Visits to Kyoto Fusioneering and Osaka University will focus on commercialization and talent.

·    Maritime and defense: The Port of San Diego, General Dynamics NASSCO, SAIC, and Firestorm Labs will meet Japanese government and industry leaders.

·    Investment and life sciences: Events in Tokyo and Osaka will connect Japanese investors and research leaders with opportunities across the San Diego–Baja California region.

 Leadership Comments 

“This mission will turn our decades-long relationship with Japan into new economic opportunities, investment, and jobs that benefit both regions,” said Mayor Todd Gloria.

“From shipbuilding and semiconductors to fusion energy, this mission will strengthen economic and security cooperation between our countries,” said Congressman Scott Peters.

“San Diego’s innovation, research, major port, and proximity to Tijuana offer Japanese companies a powerful platform for U.S. growth,” said Eric Gan, founder of MCW Japan, an affiliate of GANMI Corporation.

 Delegation and Support 

Participants include leaders from Qualcomm, ASML, General Atomics, General Dynamics NASSCO, SAIC, Mitsubishi Electric Ventures, Firestorm Labs, La Jolla Labs, the Port of San Diego, Biocom, UC San Diego, San Diego State University, and other regional organizations.

The mission is organized by WTCSD with support from the U.S. Embassy in Japan and sponsorship from Ambix Ventures, MCW Japan (GANMI Corporation), Alaska Airlines, SAIC, and San Diego State University.

サンディエゴと日本、戦略的関係を一層強化

トッド・グロリア市長、官民代表団40名超を率いて訪日

米国カリフォルニア州サンディエゴ — サンディエゴのビジネス、行政、学術界を代表する40名超の官民代表団が、2026年9月7日から11日まで日本を訪問します。トッド・グロリア・サンディエゴ市長とスコット・ピーターズ米連邦下院議員が率い、ワールド・トレード・センター・サンディエゴ（WTCSD）が主催する今回の訪問では、AI、半導体、核融合エネルギー、防衛・海洋技術、ライフサイエンス分野の投資、共同研究、事業提携を推進します。

今回の訪問はサンディエゴ市と横浜市の姉妹都市提携70周年を記念するものです。日本はサンディエゴにとって第2位の海外直接投資国で、2015年以降の投資額は76億ドルに達しています。

 主な訪問・協議内容 

·    横浜: グロリア市長が横浜市会で演説し、市幹部と会談します。

·    AI・半導体: UCサンディエゴ、クアルコム、ASML、京セラ、RISE-Aなどが、半導体設計、エッジAI、製造、材料分野の連携を協議します。

·    核融合エネルギー: 京都フュージョニアリングと大阪大学を訪問し、商用化と人材について協議します。

·    海洋・防衛: サンディエゴ港、ゼネラル・ダイナミクスNASSCO、SAIC、Firestorm Labsが、日本の政府・産業界関係者と会合します。

·    投資・ライフサイエンス: 東京と大阪で、日本の投資家・研究者とサンディエゴ・バハカリフォルニア地域の事業機会をつなぎます。
