国内で数例のみ！IKEA長久手で介助犬パピー（子犬）のトレーニングを実施（日本介助犬協会）
社会福祉法人日本介助犬協会（訓練センター：愛知県長久手市、理事長：高柳友子、https://s-dog.jp/ ）は、2026年8月2日（日）～8日（土）の国際補助犬ウィークに合わせ、2026年8月5日（水）、IKEA長久手にて、日本では前例がほとんどない介助犬候補犬のパピー（子犬）による店内社会化トレーニングを実施しました。
トレーニングには、5カ月齢のカイ（ラブラドール、オス）、6ヶ月齢のイチロー（MIX、オス）、10カ月齢のフジ（ラブラドール、オス）のパピー3頭と2歳の介助犬訓練犬ニキ（ラブラドール、メス）の計4頭が参加しました。
パピー期は、介助犬として必要な専門的なトレーニングを始める前段階として、さまざまな人や環境、音、においに慣れ、落ち着いて行動する力を育む「社会化」の大切な期間で、この経験が、将来、使用者とともに安心して社会参加できる介助犬へ成長するための土台となります。この時期にどれだけ多様な経験を積めるかが、成犬になってからの落ち着きや対応力を大きく左右するといわれていますが、その重要性が広く知られている一方で、実際にトレーニングを行える場は、日本ではまだごくわずかしかないのが現状です。
今回のトレーニングは、3頭のパピーが、絶え間ない人の往来や店内放送のアナウンス音、買い物カートの音、商品棚の並ぶ通路といった刺激の多い環境の中を、いずれも落ち着いた様子で歩く姿が見られました。大きな物音や人の流れに動揺することなく、平常心を保ちながら歩を進める姿は、社会化トレーニングの効果を裏付けるものであると同時に、こうした機会がもっと広く提供されていれば、多くのパピーたちが同じように成長できるはずだという可能性も感じました。
今回協力頂いたIKEA長久手のスタッフの方より「介助犬のパピートレーニングを行える場所が十分ではないと伺い、少しでもお力になれればと、ぜひ受け入れをさせていただきたいとお話ししました。お客さまにも温かく見守っていただきながら、パピーたちがトレーニングに取り組む姿を見ることができ、私たちにとっても貴重な経験となりました。パピーたちのこれからの成長を、少しでも応援できていれば嬉しく思います。」とコメントを頂きました。
パピーによる店内トレーニングは、犬の成長段階に合わせた慎重な計画に加え、受け入れ施設の理解と協力が不可欠です。海外では、こうした店舗でのパピートレーニングが日常的な光景として広く定着していますが、日本では、この「施設側の理解」がパピートレーニングの大きな壁となっています。パピー期のトレーニングがなぜ必要なのかという認識が施設側に十分浸透しておらず、受け入れに至らないケースが多く、実施できる機会自体が非常に限られたものに留まっています。
今後、介助犬やパピートレーニングの意義について、受け入れる側の施設や社会全体の理解が広がっていくことが、日本における育成環境の改善には不可欠であり、今回IKEA長久手様の協力により、日本でも数例しかないパピー期のトレーニングが実施されたことは大きな一歩です。
そんな場所が一つでも多く生まれることが、いつか使用者と社会を歩む介助犬を育てる力になります。

介助犬とは
介助犬とは、手や足に障がいのある方の日常生活をサポートするため、使用者一人ひとりのニーズに合わせて特別な訓練を受けた犬です。実働する介助犬ペアは全国で54ペア（2026年4月現在）にとどまっており、活躍するペアの姿を目にする機会は決して多くありません。また、その育成過程、とりわけパピー期の社会化トレーニングを目にする機会はほとんどありません。

A Few Cases in Japan: In-Store Training for Service Dog Puppies at IKEA Nagakute

Japan Service Dog Association (Training Center: Nagakute City, Aichi Prefecture; CEO: Tomoko Takayanagi; https://s-dog.jp/), social welfare corporation, organized an in-store socialization training for service dog candidate puppies at IKEA Nagakute on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, in accordance with International Assistance Dog Week (August 2–8, 2026). This kind of puppy training is rare in Japan.
Four dogs took part in the training: three puppies—Kai, a 5-month-old male Labrador; Ichiro, a 6-month-old male mixed-breed; and Fuji, a 10-month-old male Labrador—and Niki, a 2-year-old female Labrador in service dog training step.
The puppy age is an important period for “socialization”—used to a variety of people, environments, sounds, and smells, and learn to calm behavior—before starting the technical training to become service dogs. This early experience lays the groundwork for service dogs participating in society lives with service dog users. However, there are a few public places where puppies can access easily in Japan.
During this IKEA training, all three puppies were walking calmly through an environment full of people, in-store announcements, the sound of shopping carts, and aisles lined with merchandise. Their composed manners in such a stimulating situation shows us effectiveness of socialization training and if there are more opportunities to train in public spaces, many puppies can grow up like these three puppies.
IKEA Nagakute’s staff commented that, “We heard there are not enough places where service dog puppies can experience this kind of training, so we wanted to support and happy to accept this offer. Also, our customers watched over puppies warmly and all our staff could learn how puppies are trained. It was valuable experience for us as well and we hope to support these puppies' continued growth.
In-store training for puppies requires not only careful planning matched to each dog's level of growth, but also the understanding and cooperation of public places or facilities. Instore puppies training is a common overseas, but in Japan “Understanding of public places or facilities” is big barrier. Awareness of why puppy age training is necessary has not yet spread sufficiently among facility operators, and as a result, many potential facilities decline to offers. This is causing very few opportunities for such training.
Going forward, broader understanding—both among host facilities and society as a whole—of the significance of service dogs and puppy training will be essential to improving the training environment in Japan. The fact that this puppy-stage training, one of only a handful of such cases in the country, was made possible through IKEA Nagakute's cooperation marks a significant step forward. Every additional venue willing to host this kind of training brings Japan closer to raising more service dogs able to walk alongside their handlers in society.

About Service Dogs
Service dogs are specially trained to support the daily lives of people with physical disabilities affecting their hands or legs, with training to each individual user's needs. As of April 2026, only 54 active service dog pairs are working nationwide in Japan, so opportunities to see these pairs in action are rare—and opportunities to see their training process, particularly the socialization training of the puppy age, are almost nonexistent.
