Shelltas Selected for Meet New Solution OTA 2027: Taking Nine Years of Materials Research Global
Turning Underused Gifts from the Sea into Functional Materials for Water, Food and Industry
Shelltas Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Ota City, Tokyo; Representative Director: Koichi Tokuda) has been selected as an exhibitor for Meet New Solution OTA 2027.
Shelltas develops SeaFect®, a marine-derived calcium material made from Hokkaido scallop shells. Our goal is to apply technology to underutilized “gifts from the sea,” create new functionality, and deploy the resulting materials across aquaculture, agriculture, hygiene, construction and water treatment. We also aim to apply this technology to local calcium resources such as oyster and mussel shells around the world.

Meet New Solution OTA 2027 — Event Overview
Dates: February 4–5, 2027
Venue: Tokyo Innovation Base, Tokyo

SeaFect®: Marine-Derived Calcium Built on Proprietary Technology
Calcium is abundant in nature, yet limited solubility, heat generation and handling constraints can restrict its use as a functional material. Through years of research into calcium, water, living organisms and microorganisms, Shelltas established proprietary processing technologies, including a two-stage calcination process, and developed SeaFect®.
Shelltas is also strengthening its technology platform through intellectual property protection, including patents, related to SeaFect® and Water OS®. This foundation supports applications across agriculture, aquaculture, hygiene, water treatment, construction and other fields.
Beyond Research: Commercialization, Sales and Real-World Deployment
SeaFect® has already been commercialized and sold as agricultural calcium materials and sanitation products, while distribution channels in agriculture are being developed with participation from major companies. SeaFect® has also been adopted for sanitation applications by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.
Shelltas works with universities and third-party institutions to build scientific evidence, including antibacterial testing, influenza virus inactivation, deodorization performance for hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan, and formaldehyde reduction. We are also investigating why these phenomena occur across different applications.

Aquaculture | Changing Aquaculture by Starting with the Water
Aquaculture technology is advancing through AI, IoT, sensing and automated feeding. Shelltas focuses on an even more fundamental element: the water that sustains aquatic life.
Water OS® combines SeaFect® with mineral balance, water-quality conditions and microbial environments to create water systems that are less prone to degradation. Shelltas is conducting long-term scallop trials and validation with multiple aquatic species in freshwater and seawater systems, while planning scientific validation with the Aquaculture Innovation Centre (AIC) in Singapore.
Our goal is for Water OS® to become a water technology integrated into recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) around the world.

Agriculture | Building Food Production Systems for Changing Environments
Climate change, water scarcity and changing soil conditions are increasing the need for food-production systems that can perform under less predictable environments. Interest is also growing in technologies that maintain productivity and quality while reducing agricultural inputs, including biostimulants.
Shelltas does not view SeaFect® simply as a calcium fertilizer. Trials with tomatoes, cucumbers, strawberries, sweet potatoes and other crops have examined growth, quality and root-zone conditions. These observations are now being developed into scientific evidence through collaboration with universities, research institutions and producers.
In October 2026, Shelltas was selected as a Featured Start-Up at the Asia-Pacific Agri-Food Innovation Summit 2026 in Singapore.
Construction Materials | Building Function into Materials
SeaFect® is also being explored in coatings and construction materials, particularly in hot and humid regions where mold and microbial growth are important concerns.
Shelltas is studying how the antibacterial and other properties observed with SeaFect® can be built directly into materials. In the Middle East, Shelltas is working with major coatings manufacturer Jazeera Paints to evaluate applications in coatings and construction materials, with future development tailored to local climates, regulations and market needs.
Global Evaluation and Validation
Shelltas’ technology development is expanding from Japan to international markets. In May 2026, Shelltas was selected as a Featured Start-Up at the Blue Food Innovation Summit 2026 in London and presented on the main stage.
In June 2026, Shelltas delivered an oral presentation on its aquaculture initiatives at World Aquaculture Singapore 2026.
In October 2026, Shelltas is also scheduled to take the stage as a Featured Start-Up at the Asia-Pacific Agri-Food Innovation Summit 2026 in Singapore.
Alongside these international presentations, Shelltas is advancing scientific validation with overseas research institutions including AIC, developing knowledge accumulated in Japan into a technology platform that can be reproduced and evaluated globally.
Not “Waste,” but Underutilized Gifts from the Sea
Shelltas began with Japanese scallop shells, but we do not see them simply as waste. Scallop, oyster and mussel shells contain abundant calcium and represent “gifts from the sea” whose potential as functional materials has yet to be fully realized.
What Shelltas aims to take globally is not the shells themselves, but technology that gives calcium resources new function and value.
In the future, Shelltas aims to use locally available calcium resources, including oyster and mussel shells, transform them into functional materials, and return that value to local agriculture, aquaculture, water treatment, hygiene and construction.
Rather than shipping Japanese raw materials globally, we aim to take Japanese-developed technology to the world and turn local marine resources into value needed by each region.

Meet New Solution OTA 2027 as a New Starting Point for Co-Creation
Shelltas does not aim to be a company that simply sells a single powder. Our goal is to unlock the potential of materials through science, protect that value through intellectual property, turn it into products and deploy the resulting technology globally.
From SeaFect® to Water OS®, Shelltas continues to expand one core material across aquaculture, agriculture, hygiene, construction and water treatment.
Through Meet New Solution OTA 2027, Shelltas aims to pursue new collaboration with companies in Ota City’s manufacturing ecosystem, including joint development, productization and mass production.
Technology developed in Japan, built for global use. Shelltas is moving into its next stage.
Companies interested in co-development or business collaboration involving SeaFect® or Water OS® are welcome to contact us.
Comment from Koichi Tokuda, Representative Director of Shelltas Co., Ltd.
“For approximately nine years, we have focused on calcium as a material and studied its relationship with water, living organisms and microorganisms through repeated experimentation and validation.
It began with scallop shells. As our research progressed, we began to see how this technology could connect to agriculture, aquaculture, hygiene, construction materials and water treatment.
What we want to deliver to the world is not scallop shells themselves, but technology that gives new value to resources born from the sea. Through Meet New Solution OTA 2027, we hope to create new technologies and products together with Ota City’s manufacturing companies and develop Japanese materials technology for global use.”
