Shelltas、サウジ大手Jazeera Paintsとの塗料開発が第2フェーズへ　SeaFect®の機能性評価を開始

ホタテ貝殻から生まれた海洋由来カルシウム素材で、防カビ性能など実用化に向けた検証を推進

株式会社Shelltas（本社：東京都大田区、代表取締役：徳田浩一、以下「Shelltas」）は、サウジアラビアを代表する塗料メーカーJazeera Paintsと進めている、ホタテ貝殻由来の海洋由来カルシウム素材「SeaFect®」を活用した塗料開発について、第一フェーズの検証を完了し、第二フェーズとなる機能性評価へ移行しました。

Shelltasは、北海道産ホタテ貝殻を原料とするSeaFect®を、独自の焼成技術によって機能性を持つ海洋由来カルシウム素材へと加工しています。「廃棄物を処理する」のではなく、ホタテ貝殻などの水産系廃棄物・副産物に新たな機能と価値を与え、産業素材へ転換することを目指しています。

日本で蓄積した研究エビデンスを、海外での製品開発へ

SeaFect®については、これまで長崎国際大学、鹿児島大学、宮崎大学などとの研究・評価を通じて、抗菌、抗ウイルス、消臭をはじめとする機能性に関するエビデンスを蓄積してきました。

Shelltasでは、こうした日本国内での研究成果を基盤に、SeaFect®が実際の製品の中でどのような価値を提供できるのか、海外市場においても検証を進めています。

今回のJazeera Paintsとの取り組みは、その実装先の一つとして塗料・コーティング分野に着目したものです。日本で生まれたSeaFect®と、Jazeera Paintsが持つ塗料開発・製造の知見を組み合わせ、環境性能と実用性能を両立する新たな塗料の可能性を検証しています。

第一フェーズを完了。防カビ性能などの機能性評価へ

第一フェーズでは、SeaFect®を塗料材料へ配合した際の相溶性や、塗料としての基礎的な適合性を中心に検証を実施しました。

その結果を踏まえ、現在は第二フェーズとして、防カビ性能を含む機能性評価など、より実用化を意識した検証へ進んでいます。

Shelltasでは、素材の配合量だけでなく、塗膜中でのSeaFect®の状態や、表面における機能発現についても重要な検証項目としています。 今後は両社で研究知見を共有しながら、塗料としての品質・機能性・環境性能の最適なバランスを検討していきます。

Shelltas and Jazeera Paints Advance SeaFect® Paint Development to Phase Two

Shelltas Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Ota City, Tokyo; Representative Director: Hirokazu Tokuda; “Shelltas”) has completed the first phase of a paint development project with Jazeera Paints, a leading Saudi Arabian paint manufacturer, using SeaFect®, a marine-derived calcium material made from scallop shells. The project has now entered its second phase, focused on functional performance evaluation.

SeaFect® is made from Hokkaido scallop shells using Shelltas’ proprietary calcination technology. Rather than simply treating waste, Shelltas aims to give fisheries-derived waste and by-products new functions and value, transforming them into industrial materials.

Research Evidence from Japan, Applied to Product Development Overseas

Through research and evaluation with Nagasaki International University, Kagoshima University, the University of Miyazaki and others, Shelltas has built evidence relating to SeaFect®’s antibacterial, antiviral and deodorizing properties.

Building on this research, Shelltas is evaluating how SeaFect® can create value in actual products overseas. The collaboration with Jazeera Paints focuses on paints and coatings, combining SeaFect® with Jazeera Paints’ expertise in paint development and manufacturing to explore coatings that balance environmental and practical performance.

Phase One Completed; Functional Evaluation Underway

The first phase focused on compatibility and basic formulation suitability when SeaFect® was incorporated into paint materials. Based on those results, the project has moved into a second phase, including evaluation of antifungal performance and other functions with practical application in mind.

Shelltas is evaluating not only dosage, but also the state of SeaFect® within the coating film and how its functionality is expressed at the surface. The companies will continue sharing research insights while exploring the optimal balance of quality, functionality and environmental performance.
