プラスチックフリーで植物由来の次世代型フードサービス・パッケージを開発するスウェーデンのイノベーション企業 LIPLID AB（本社：ストックホルム、CEO：イェスパー・ベルトールド、以下「LIPLID社」）と、ザンビアで国際的なフェアトレード・バナナ繊維のバリューチェーンを構築・展開する株式会社ワンプラネット・カフェ（本社：東京都港区、代表：エクベリ聡子、以下「ワンプラネット・カフェ」）は、持続可能パッケージ製品におけるバナナ繊維の活用を目的とした、戦略的協業を開始します。

本パートナーシップは、化石燃料由来パッケージに代わる再生可能素材の開発において高度な技術を有するLIPLID社と、農業廃棄物を倫理的かつ価値ある素材へと変換し、地域社会に根ざしたサプライチェーンを確立しているワンプラネット・カフェとの協業により実現しました。

バナナの栽培過程で通常は廃棄されているバナナの茎は、農業廃棄物を削減すると同時に、生産地域のコミュニティに新たな経済的・環境的価値をもたらす、極めて有望な次世代素材です。

ワンプラネット・カフェがザンビアで展開する世界基準（WFTO認証）のフェアトレード・バリューチェーンは、現地の人々の生計を支援し、周辺の生態系や野生動物の生息地を守る持続可能な事業を展開することで、実証可能な社会的・環境的インパクトをもたらしてきました。LIPLID社は、この取り組みが自社の掲げるサステナビリティビジョンと強く合致していると確信し、今回の協業を通じて現地へのポジティブな影響を共に拡大していく方法を模索します。

■今後の展望と展開について 

今後数ヶ月にわたり、両社はLIPLID社の製品ラインナップにバナナ繊維を統合するための技術的実現可能性を共同で評価し、初期段階の試作モデルの開発に取り組みます。さらに、今後の研究開発を推進するための資金調達の探索や、ノルウェーのFibreFlow ASを含む外部パートナーとのさらなる連携の可能性についても検討を進めてまいります。

ワンプラネット・カフェは、日本の複数の大学や参画企業とのパートナーシップを通じて、すでにバイオプラスチックやパッケージを含むバナナ繊維の応用展開を進めています。LIPLID社は、本事業で連携する初の北欧企業であり、今回の連携は両社にとって重要なマイルストーンとなります。

なお、本取り組みは初期の探索・研究段階となります。現時点で確定した商業契約、製品発売時期、および具体的なスケジュールは未定であり、両社は「共に知識を蓄積し、アイデアを検証していく」という共通の志のもとで歩みを進め、進捗に応じて随時最新情報を公開していく予定です。

LIPLID and One Planet Café to Explore Banana Fibre as a Next-Generation Packaging Material

Stockholm, Sweden, [DATE]. LIPLID AB, the Swedish innovator in plastic-free, plant-based

foodservice packaging, and One Planet Café Ltd., the Tokyo-registered sustainability

company behind an internationally recognised Fair Trade banana fibre value chain in

Zambia, today announced a strategic collaboration to investigate the use of banana fibres in

future sustainable packaging products.

The partnership brings together LIPLID’s expertise in developing renewable alternatives to

fossil-based packaging with One Planet Café’s established, community-rooted supply chain,

one that transforms an agricultural residue into a valuable, ethically sourced material.

Banana fibre, a byproduct of banana cultivation typically discarded or burned as waste,

offers a compelling opportunity: reducing agricultural waste while creating new economic

and environmental value for the communities that produce it.

One Planet Café’s Fair Trade value chain already delivers measurable social and

environmental impact in Zambia, supporting local livelihoods and encouraging farming

practices that reduce pressure on surrounding land and wildlife habitats. LIPLID sees strong

alignment with its own sustainability ambitions and is keen to explore how it can actively

support and amplify this impact as the collaboration develops.

Peo Ekberg, Co-founder of One Planet Café, added: “Our Fair Trade value chain in Zambia

was built to create long-term, local value that helps reduce poverty and protect endangered

species such as elephants, transforming what would otherwise be waste. Partnering with

LIPLID lets us explore how that value chain can extend into an entirely new category, while

staying true to the communities and principles it was built on.”

Over the coming months, the two companies will jointly evaluate the technical feasibility of

incorporating banana fibres into LIPLID’s product range, develop early-stagedemonstrators, and explore funding pathways to support further research and development,

including potential collaboration with FibreFlow AS in Norway.

The two companies also note that One Planet Café is already developing banana fibre

applications, including bioplastics and packaging, with several Japanese university and

industry partners. LIPLID is the first Scandinavian company to join this collaboration, a

milestone both parties are excited about.

The collaboration is in its early, exploratory phase. No commercial agreement, product

launch, or timeline has been finalised; the companies describe the work as a shared

ambition to build knowledge and test ideas together, with further updates to follow as the

partnership progresses.
