駐日アイルランド大使より日本の皆様へ「ハッピー・ハロウィーン！」

～ハロウィーンは、収穫期の終わりを祝う古代アイルランド・ケルト人のお祭りです～

ハロウィーン・カーニバル（デリー県）

駐日アイルランド大使アン・バリントンは、今年もハロウィーンを祝う様々な装飾や衣装を目にして、「古代アイルランドのお祭りであるハロウィーンが、ここ日本で根付いているというのは大変素晴らしいことであり、両国の文化の類似性を示す証の一つであります」と述べています。

大使は次のように説明します。

「何千年も前、古代アイルランドのケルト人は収穫期の終わりを祝って、焚き火、饗宴、異教徒の儀式など、特別なお祭りを行っていました。ハロウィーン（アイルランド語では、夏の終わりを意味する『Samhainサワン』と言います）とは、現世と来世を分ける境界が弱まる時で、死者の魂が墓からよみがえり、地方をさまよって生家に帰ると信じられていました。死者の魂は、幽霊や妖精、ゴブリン、悪魔などの姿をしており、彼らが家に戻ってきた時に機嫌を損ねないよう、人々は食べ物や飲み物を出しておきました。また、自らも不気味な仮装をすることで、彼らから身を隠していました。

アイルランドにキリスト教が伝えられた際、幽霊や妖精、悪魔を信じるケルト人の考えを変えようとしましたが、完全には成功しませんでした。そのため、現在でもアイルランドではハロウィーンが伝統的にお祝いされています。また、過去2世紀に渡り多くのアイルランド人が移民したことで、ハロウィーンの伝統がアメリカに伝わり、世界的な人気に繋がったのです。

Ambassador of Ireland wishes Japan a Happy Halloween!
Halloween is an ancient Irish Celtic festival celebrating the end of harvest season

Commenting on all the wonderful decorations and costumes celebrating Halloween, Ireland’s Ambassador to Japan, Ms. Anne Barrington, said: “Halloween is an ancient Irish festival and it is wonderful to see that it has found a home here in Japan. It is yet another sign of the great similarities between Irish and Japanese culture.” 

The Ambassador explained:

“Many millennia ago, the ancient Irish Celts celebrated the end of the harvest season with a special festival of fires, feasts and pagan ceremonies. Halloween – or Samhain, in the Irish language, meaning summer’s end – is a time when the barrier between our world and the afterlife thins, and the souls of the dead arise from their graves, wander the countryside and return to their homes. These souls take the form of ghosts, fairies, goblins and demons. Irish Celts would leave out food and drink to keep them happy, and dressed up in scary costumes to disguise themselves from the demons.

“Christianity tried to change our belief in ghosts, fairies and demons, but never fully succeeded, and Halloween is still celebrated traditionally in Ireland even today. With the great waves of emigration from Ireland over the last two centuries, Irish people brought this tradition to the United States, leading to its global popularity.
