ENIGMA TO DECIFARE, UNIDENTIFIED CITIZEN, SHADOW TRANSFORMING BETWEEN CITY BUILDINGS, AS WELL AS A COMIC BOOK CHARACTER. THESE ARE THE IMPRESSIONS WE HAD WHEN GETTING TO KNOW THE ARTIST, RAFAEL SLIKS, AND HIS PROVOCATIVE WORK. RAPID STROKES, PAINTING FLAMES OF ACTION.
GLUED TO WALLS AND ALLEYS THROUGHOUT THE WORLDS STREETS, HIS SUTLE FIGURE MERGES WITH THE CAOTIC ABSRACTION THAT HE SPREADS.
HIS ACTIONS AND TAGS ARE HIGHLY PRECISE, THANKS TO HIS SKILLS (SKILLS BACKWORDS READS SLIKS). HIS WORK DEVELOPS LIKE AN IMPROVISED DANCE MOVEMENT, LEAVING HIS TRACE IN ALLEYS AND AVENUES, RICHLY LOADED WITH ELEMENTS FRPM THE ORIGINS OF ART HISTORY TO ITS MORE ADVANCED AND CURRENT EXPRESSIONS.
AT THE CORE OF SLIKS’ WORK IS THE SUTIL BRIDGING BETWEEN TWO WORLDS: URBAN CHAOS WITH ENCHANTING WILD NATURE, PURE, LOADED OF MICROORGANIC LAYERS, TEXTURES, ODORS, COLORS AND LUMINESCENCES.
SLIKS’ CURRENT WORK POINTS TOWARDS HIS INNER JOURNEY, A LABYRINTH, LIKE DON JUAN’S TOLD BY CASTAÑEDA, FULL OF SUTILTIES, DREAMS, TRACES, SIGNS AND RANDOM SIGNS.
IF YOU HAPPEN TO CROSS PATHS WITH THIS FIGURE ONE DAY, YOU WILL CERTAINLY BE SURPRISED. FAST LIKE A NINJA, SLIKS EXECUTES HIS MOVEMENTS IN THE STREETS WITH INSPIRATION FROM MARTIAL ARTS AND HIS EARLY SKATEBOARDING YEARS.
SLIKS ALSO DRAWS INSPIRATION FROM LASCAUX SIGNALS, ORIENTAL IDEOGRAMS, DA VINCI’S SECRET FORMULAS, POLLOCK’S ACTION PAITING, MAGRITTE’S ONRIAN DEVANIES, AND YVES KLEIN’S OUSADIAS.
SLIKS IS AN ENIGMA. BUT WHAT IS THE REASON BEHIND NEVER SHOWING HIS FACE OR REVEALING HIS PRIVATE LIFE? HE IS A PUZZLE TO BE DECIFERED. HIS WORK BEGAN IN THE STREETS AND ALLEYS OF SÃO PAULO, THE ORIGIN OF HIS INTERNATIONALLY REACHING TRAJECTORY.
LIKE MANY KIDS GROWING UP IN THE ’80S, RAFAEL LOVED COMIC BOOKS, ORIENTAL MOVIES ON MARTIAL ARTS, AND SKATEBOARDING AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOOD WHERE HE GREW UP, BEXIGA (BELA VISTA).
AS A YOUNG CHILD, SEEING THE VAST CITY FROM BEHIND THE GATE OF HIS HOUSE TEMPTED HIM TO ADVENTURE INTO UNFAMILIAR TERRITORY, AVENUES, ALLEYS, AND PARKS TO DISCOVER THE UNKNOWN.
WHEN HE WAS ABLE TO ESCAPE SCHOOL, HE WOULD EXPLORE THE WORLD WITHOUT RULES AND BORDERS, TAGGING HIS SIGNATURE ACROSS SURFACES.
HE RECALLS OF HIS INTEREST IN THE VARIETY OF GRAFFITI, TAGS AND POETRY THAT HE ENCOUNTERED DURING HIS OUTINGS. THE OCCUPATION OF EMPTY SPACE WITH ART SPURRED HIS INSTINCTIVE IMPULSE TO DRAW, SKETCH, INTO EMPTY NOTEBOOKS AND SPACE THAT HE ENCOUNTERED.
EVEN WHEN WORKING IN OTHER AREAS, SLIKS NEVER STOPPED TAGGING HIS SIGNATURE AROUND THE STREETS, TRAPPED POETRY.
WHILE WORKING WITH THE FASHION INDUSTRY, HE UNDERSTANDED THE MONOTONY AND THE COMPETITION BETWEEN THE MODELS TRYING TO BE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL OF THE SEASON. ONE DAY, SLIKS HAD THE IDEA TO TAKE A HEADSHOT OF SOME OF THE MODELS AND TAG HIS SIGNATURE ON TOP, LIKE A NINJA THAT DANCES IN THE DARK WITH A LANTERN.
BUT HE MADE SURE TO NEVER COVER THE EYES OF THE MODELS, FOR THE EYES ARE THE DOOR OF PERCEPTION INTO THE INNER WORLD. THIS ATTITUDE IS A FUNDAMENTAL ASPECT OF HIS WORK. LOOKING WITHIN.
HE THEN DEVELOPED A SERIES OF ORIGINALS, (LATER TRANSORMED INTO PRINTS) which had – beyond the models – some myths of the history of art, such as JAN VAN EEYK and Andy Warhol. ALWAYS WITH HIS INTERFERENCES AND THE UNMISTAKABLE PERMANENCE OF THE GAZE. SOME SAGES SAY THE GAZE IS THE GATE OF THE SOUL.
THE SUPERPOSITION OF HIS LINES IS AN EMBLAMATIC ELEMENT AND IMPORTANT PATTERN OF HIS VISUAL WORK. ON PHOTOS, WALLS, ALLEYS, THE RITUAL ALWAYS REPEATS, IN QUICK, CIRCULAR MOVEMENTS, THROUGH WHICH SLIKS PRESENTS LAYERS OF HIS INNER WORLD, THE SURFACE BECOMES A MIRROR OF HIS SOUL.
IN TAOISM, THERE IS A CONCEPT OF THE ‘ INNER SMILE’. SLIKS’S WORK – WITH ITS ALLUSIONS TO ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM, ZAZEN PAINTING, AUTOMATIC WRITING, TO HIS CHILDHOOD SKETCHES – SEARCHES TO PAINT A TONE OF THE INDIVIDUALS INTERIOR UNIVERSE. HIS WORK HAS THE CAPACITY TO MAKE US FEEL HAPPY, ON THE INSIDE.
AFTER A SABATICAL SPENT ON THE BEACHES IN SOUTH BRAZIL, SLIKES RETURNED TO THE SAO PAULO METROPOLIS AND STARTED LIVING WITH ARTIST FRIENDS, WHICH WAS AN IMPORTANT STEP TO RAISE HIS TRAJECTORY. IT WOULDN’T BE LONG UNTIL HE FILLS HIS PASSPORT WITH STAMPS FROM VARIOUS CONTINENTS.
WITH A RICH PORTFOLIO IN ABSTRACTS THAT INTRICATELY REFLECTS HIS INNER WORLD, SLIKS WORKS INCESSANTLY IN HIS ATELIER, BUT HE NEVER STOPS EXPLORING UNMARKED SPACES OF CITIES. HE MAKES HIS MARK THROUGH GRAFFITI, TAGS OR INTEFERENCES ALONE OR WITH OTHER STREET ARTIST FRIENDS.
THIS CONTEMPORARY URBAN VISUAL ARTIST FOLLOWS HIS INNER RHYTHM, SWIFTLY AND GRACEFULLY MOVING HIS NIMBLE BEING, LIKE AN ORIENTAL BALLET ON A DARK NIGHT.
HIS ART EXPLODES, SWIRLS, SCREAMS, AND OVERFLOWS, ACCUMULATING LAYERS, AND ACCORDING TO HIM, SHOULD SPEAK BY ITSELF.
