YOMI International

Hokusai's "Great Wave" in Japanese Denim: A Coffin Heads to New York for Memento Mori in NYC's Coffin Experience

Made by Hiroshima coffin maker KYOEI from Kaihara denim, "The Great Wave" will be open to visitors at RESOBOX East Village on Nov. 5–6

TOKYO — October 6, 2026 — YOMI International today announced the coffin that visitors will lie in at the Coffin Experience of Memento Mori in NYC: The Art of Japanese Life and Death, a two-day festival on Thursday, November 5, and Friday, November 6, 2026, at RESOBOX East Village in New York. Made by KYOEI Co., Ltd., a coffin maker in Fukuyama, Hiroshima, the coffin, already shown at exhibitions across Japan, is wrapped in denim printed with Katsushika Hokusai's The Great Wave off Kanagawa.

About the coffin

Exterior: Hokusai's wave and Mount Fuji sweep across indigo denim, from the lid down the sides. It is a coffin for anyone who loves the ocean, denim and ukiyo-e.

Interior: the lining, pillow and blanket are all made of white denim.

Fabric: denim from Kaihara, which handles every step from spinning to finishing and supplies about half of Japan's denim fabric. Like KYOEI, Kaihara is based in Fukuyama.

Size: 1,900 mm long, 580 mm wide, 500 mm high.

The Coffin Experience

Visitors lie in a Japanese coffin for a few quiet minutes and reflect on the life they want to live. The Coffin Experience runs on both days and is included in admission. KYOEI CEO Masamune Kurihara will be on site to help run it, and New York-based members of HIFUMI Coach will guide participants and help them think through the words that matter most in their lives.

Masamune Kurihara, CEO of KYOEI Co., Ltd.

"Our theme is a coffin that reflects the person. We have made coffins of wood, fabric, embroidery, denim and paint, without being bound by convention. Underneath it all is a phrase we hold dear: how you die is how you lived. In New York, where cultures, religions and values cross, I want to see with my own eyes how people respond to our coffins."

Kurihara's thoughts on bringing his coffins to New York also appeared in issue No. 1073 of Shukan NY Seikatsu, a Japanese-language weekly newspaper in New York, as part 4 of its series on life and death overseas.

Masumi Murata, founder of YOMI International

"For more than ten years I have run coffin experience workshops, and more than 1,000 people have lain in a coffin with me. At Shukatsu Snack Memento Mori, the end-of-life snack bar I run in Tokyo, a coffin is always there, so anyone can lie in it at any time.

When people lie in a coffin, many begin to think about how they want to live. I hope a few minutes held by Hokusai's wave will give New Yorkers a chance to look at their own lives again."
