2023年に開校したラグビー・スクール・ジャパン（Rugby School Japan、以下RSJ）は、英国名門校ラグビー・スクール・グループの一員として、東京首都圏で初となる男女共学のブリティッシュ・ボーディングスクール（英国式全寮制学校）です。

開校から3年目で生徒数300名に到達し、現在は30か国以上から生徒が集い、そのうち55％がボーディング（寮生活）を行っています。

教職員は英国、世界各国、そして日本出身の優秀な97名で構成されており、すでに初年度の卒業生は、ユニバーシティ・カレッジ・ロンドン（UCL）、キングス・カレッジ・ロンドン、マギル大学、エディンバラ大学、香港中文大学、北京大学、早稲田大学など、世界を代表する大学への進学実績を上げています。

今後RSJは、2027年までに生徒数500名、そして5年以内に定員780名への成長を目指し、北海道共和町（ニセコ連峰エリア）における新たなエンリッチメント・キャンパスの開設も計画しています。

世界最大都市圏における18か月から18歳までの一貫プログラム

また、RSJは世界最大の都市圏・首都圏（人口3,800万人超）における初の英国式全寮制学校として、東アジアにおける新しい教育モデルを確立しつつあります。

英国ラグビー校の日本側パートナーであるクラレンス・エデュケーション・アジア（CEA）は、東京において18か月から18歳までを対象としたグループ校による一貫教育プログラム「CEA Pathway」を提供しています。

このプログラムは、クラレンス・インターナショナル・スクール（18か月～5歳対象、東京都港区）、フェニックス・ハウス・インターナショナル・スクール（6～11歳対象、東京都千代田区）、そしてラグビー・スクール・ジャパン（11～18歳対象、千葉県柏市）によって構成され、発達段階に応じた学びを通じて、次のステップへとスムーズに移行できる国際教育の道を整えています。

RSJでは、学問・芸術・スポーツ・地域貢献活動・探究学習などを総合的に組み合わせたIGCSEおよびAレベルのカリキュラムを提供し、「全人教育（Whole Person Education）」の理念のもと、100種類以上の課外活動を展開しています。

その内容は、プログラミングから古典文学、CAD製図ラボから舞台美術（セットデザイン）、シェイクスピア劇から室内合唱、そして地域奉仕活動から英国発祥の「エディンバラ公賞」までと幅広く、生徒一人ひとりの個性と創造性を引き出す多様な機会に満ちています。

また、由緒あるスクール・ハウス、ルパート・ブルック・ハウス、チューダー・ハウス、シェリフ・ハウス、サウスフィールド・ハウス、タウン・ハウスの6つのハウス制を導入し、英国本校の伝統を受け継ぎながら、本校の同名ハウスとの実際の生徒交流を通じて、国際的な学びや体験、グローバルコミュニティ精神を育んでいます。

東京大学柏キャンパスでの特別プログラムを実現

RSJは、千葉大学のキャンパスに隣接し、近隣の東京大学、まちづくりを行う三井不動産との連携を通じて、「学術・サステナビリティ・イノベーション」を融合させた教育モデルを構築しています。特に特筆すべきは、2024年度より、徒歩圏内にある東京大学柏の葉キャンパスとの協働により、RSJ生が大学附属研究所のラボで学ぶ特別プログラムを実現したことです。これにより、生徒たちは早い段階から本格的な研究や実験に触れる機会を得ており、学問への関心と探究心を一層深めています。

さらに、現在計画中の北海道共和町（ニセコ連峰）におけるエンリッチメント・キャンパスでは、自然・冒険・人間形成をテーマに、北海道の雄大な自然の中で学ぶ体験型教育を展開します。

これらのプログラムは、「人格形成を重んずるラグビー校の精神」と「全人教育」の理念を、日本の最先端研究機関との協働や、四季豊かな自然環境の中で実践するものであり、真の人間的成長の場と機会を新たに創出するものです。

Rugby School Japan Reaches 300-Pupil Milestone in its Third Year A New Chapter of Growth and Excellence

Rugby School Japan (RSJ), established in 2023 as part of the 450-year-old Rugby School Group, has reached 300 pupils in its third academic year. Based in Kashiwanoha Campus City, 30 minutes from central Tokyo, it is Greater Tokyo’s first British boarding school and now hosts pupils from 30+ nationalities, with 55% boarders. RSJ employs 97 teachers and staff from the UK, Japan, and the international school sector, and its first leavers have progressed to leading universities including UCL, King’s College London, McGill, Edinburgh, Hong Kong, Peking, and Waseda. Looking ahead, RSJ targets 500 pupils by 2027 and full capacity of 780 within five years, supported by a planned Enrichment Campus in Kyowa (Niseko Mountains), Hokkaido.

Looking ahead, RSJ targets 500 pupils by 2027 and full capacity of 780 within five years, signalling the next phase of steady growth and a continued commitment to excellence.

Founded in 2023 as Rugby School’s second international school in its 450-year history, RSJ is a pioneering partnership between Rugby School Group and CEA that brings the heritage and ethos of British education to Japan. As Greater Tokyo’s first British boarding school, it is setting new benchmarks for academic and pastoral standards in East Asia.

CEA offers a continuous pathway from 18 months to 18 years across its Tokyo schools - Clarence International School (18 months–5 years), Phoenix House International School (6–11 years), and RSJ. This seamless “CEA Pathway” supports developmentally appropriate learning and prepares pupils for each step.

Since opening, RSJ has rapidly grown into a vibrant 11–18 community of girls and boys. Its first leavers have already secured places at leading universities - including UCL, King’s College London, McGill, Edinburgh, CUHK, Peking University, and Waseda - an exceptional start for a new school.

The school's commitment to excellence has been globally recognised, having been awarded Beacon Status by the Council of British International Schools (COBIS).

RSJ employs 97 teachers and staff from the UK, Japan, and the international school sector, enriching both boarding and day provision. The curriculum leads to IGCSE and A Level, complemented by 100+ enrichment activities across arts, sport, service, and research in line with Rugby’s whole-person philosophy.

Six Houses - School House, Rupert Brooke, Tudor, Sheriff, Southfield, and Town - root pastoral life and link to the traditions of Rugby School UK. They foster independence, collaboration, and a strong sense of community.

With 300 pupils from 30+ nationalities, including 55% boarders, a distinctive and inclusive “RSJ culture” is emerging. It blends British tradition with Japanese innovation and a global outlook.

Situated in Kashiwanoha Campus City, a green, academic district about 30 minutes by train from central Tokyo, RSJ offers Day, Weekly (Mon–Sat), and Termly Boarding. Weekly boarding is especially popular, balancing school engagement with family time.

As part of Rugby School Group’s global expansion, RSJ joins sister schools in Southeast Asia (Thailand) and Africa (Nigeria), with a project forthcoming in the Middle East. Together they form a connected international network.

Kashiwanoha’s ecosystem enables collaboration with Chiba University, The University of Tokyo, and Mitsui Fudosan, the smart-city’s master planner. Joint initiatives integrate excellence, sustainability, and innovation, including a programme placing RSJ scholars in nearby university laboratories.

Looking ahead, RSJ plans an Enrichment Campus in Kyowa (Niseko Mountains), Hokkaido, extending learning into nature, adventure, and character development - an authentic evolution of Rugby’s whole-person ethos.
