Prominent Irish LGBT Activist visits Japan

10月3日から8日にかけて、アイルランド人LGBTアクティビスト、ローリー・オニール氏が来日します。

2015年5月、アイルランドは国民投票により同性婚を認めた世界初の国家となりました。この婚姻の平等を認める投票結果は、LGBTコミュニティに対する平等な権利をもたらすという、アイルランドにとって画期的な一歩となりました。その社会的変化のスピードは速く、同性愛が差別されていた1993年からわずか25年足らずで、同性婚が認められることとなりました。

ドラァグパフォーマー“パンティ・ブリス”として有名なオニール氏は、アイルランドにおける婚姻の平等を訴えるキャンペーンの旗印となりました。自身を「偶発的アクティビスト（accidental activist）」と名のるオニール氏は、1990年代に東京でエンターテイナーとしてのキャリアを開始しました。

オニール氏は来日中、アイルランド大使館と日本のパートナーの主催する様々なイベントに参加します。

10月4日（木）、オニール氏は、パネルイベント・公開討論「EUと日本の事例からみる LGBTの権利拡大に向けた取り組み」にパネリストの一人として参加します。本イベントは駐日EU代表部を会場に行われ、冒頭にパトリシア・フロア次期駐日欧州連合大使およびポール・カヴァナ次期駐日アイルランド大使がご挨拶します。オニール氏のほか、尾辻かな子衆議院議員など、EUと日本からパネリストが参加し、モデレーターは日本文学研究者のロバート・キャンベル氏が務めます。

10月5日（金）には、アイルランド大使館とNPO法人レインボー・リール東京の共催で、オニール氏の半生と同性婚合法化キャンペーンにおける活躍を描いた傑作ドキュメンタリー映画『クイーン・オブ・アイルランド』の特別上映会が行われます。上映後にはオニール氏が“パンティ・ブリス”として登壇するトークイベントを予定しています。

オニール氏の来日に際して、カヴァナ次期駐日アイルランド大使は次のように述べています。
「近年、日本でもLGBTの権利、平等への関心が高まっていることと存じます。大きな社会の変化を経験したアイルランドには、日本の皆様へ説得力を持ってお伝えできることがあります。オニール氏の来日を通じて、アイルランドの経験を日本の政界、地方自治体、学術界、NPO、青年団体やメディアの皆様方と共有し、それによって、日本における議論の発展に貢献できればと考えております。」

Prominent Irish LGBT Activist visits Japan

Irish LGBT Rights activist, Mr Rory O’Neill, will visit Japan between 3 and 8 October.

Ireland became the first country in the world to introduce same-sex marriage by popular vote at a referendum in May 2015. The successful marriage equality referendum was a milestone on Ireland’s journey to equality in the treatment of its LGBT community. The pace of social change in this area has been rapid; marriage equality was introduced less than 25 years after the decriminalisation of homosexuality in 1993.

Mr O’Neill, a prominent drag performer known as Panti Bliss, was a leading figure in the campaign for marriage equality in Ireland.  Mr O’Neill, who describes himself as an ‘accidental activist’, began his career as an entertainer in Tokyo in the 1990s. 

On this visit to Japan, Mr O’Neill will participate in a series of events organised by the Embassy of Ireland and partners in Japan.

On Thursday 4 October, Mr O’Neill will speak at a dynamic panel event and public discussion on LGBT rights entitled ‘Advancing LGBT Rights: Sharing Perspectives from the EU & Japan’. The event will be held at the EU Delegation in Tokyo and will be opened by EU Ambassador-Designate to Japan, Ms Patricia Flor, and Ambassador-Designate of Ireland, Mr Paul Kavanagh. Panellists from the EU and Japan will be led by Member of the House of Representatives, Ms Kanako Otsuji, and the discussion will be moderated by writer and academic, Dr Robert Campbell.

On Friday 5 October, Mr O’Neill will appear at a screening of the acclaimed documentary ‘The Queen of Ireland’ about O’Neill’s life and role in the marriage equality campaign, in cooperation with Rainbow Reel Tokyo, organisers of Tokyo International Lesbian and Gay Film Festival. The film will be subtitled in Japanese and followed by a Q & A with O’Neill’s alter ego, Panti Bliss, as a special guest.

Commenting on the visit, Ambassador-Designate Kavanagh said: “We believe there is a growing interest in LGBT rights and equality in Japan in recent years and that Ireland has a compelling story to tell given our society’s transformation. With this visit, we hope to share experiences from Ireland with our Japanese friends in politics, local government, academia, NPOs, youth groups and media, and to contribute to the ongoing debate in Japan”.
