アジア学院クラウドファンディング、開始1週間で支援総額191万円を突破 ― 長崎原爆の日に振り返る、卒業生の平和活動と広島平和文化センター元理事長の言葉
130名からのご支援に感謝。8月6日・9日の原爆の日に合わせ、西日本研修が育んだ「平和のバトン」を伝える2つの物語をお届けします。
学校法人アジア学院（所在地：栃木県那須塩原市、代表：山本俊正）が2026年8月1日（土）に開始したクラウドファンディング「隣人とやさしく生きる」は、開始から1週間が経過した8月9日時点で、支援総額191万円を突破し、130名の方々からご支援をいただきました。

8月9日は、81年前に長崎に原爆が落とされた日です。8月6日の広島原爆の日にあわせては、1988年にアジア学院を卒業したトーマス・マシューさんのことを活動報告でご紹介しました。当時の西日本研修で広島の証言に触れたことが、彼のその後の人生を大きく変え、インドへ被爆者を初めて招き、核実験のドキュメンタリーを制作するなど、平和のバトンを世界へつないでいく歩みにつながりました。

アジア学院が50周年を迎えた2023年の入学式には、広島平和文化センター元理事長のスティーブン・リーパーさんが来賓として訪れ、こんな言葉を残してくださいました。
「アジア学院を、心から大好きです。こんな信じられないほど進んだ場所は、他に見たことがありません。これほど大きな組織でここまで自給自足を実現しているところはない。私たちは『力の文明』に生きていますが、原爆が教えてくれたのは、力による解決はもう通用しないということ。『愛の文明』へ卒業できなければ人類に未来はありません。アジア学院はその卒業を体現する、世界に類を見ないモデルです。」（詳細はこちら：https://syncable.biz/campaign/9823/report/14135#campaign-tabs）
アジア学院が訴える「土からの平和」
アジア学院は足元からの「土からの平和」を訴えます。平和への営みを、一人ひとりが実践することは、決して平易なことではありません。今回のキャンペーンのテーマは「隣人とやさしく生きる」です。私たちは、私たち自身を変えていくことでしか、世界を変えていくことはできないのだと思います。
アジア学院に触れるとき、最初は映画館でリアルなドキュメンタリーを見ているような感覚かもしれません。アジア・アフリカからの学生たちやアメリカ・ドイツからのボランティア・インターンたちなどのもたらす多様性と、農村コミュニティリーダーたちの世界の社会課題との向き合いが、生々しくコミュニティに息づいています。でも、アジア学院の強みは、それだけに留まらないところにあると思います。否が応でも「自ら」が問われていきます。
学生たちにとって、学びが自らを変え、自らの生きる地域を変え、その学びは受け継がれ、コミュニティを変えていきます。そんな世界の社会課題の最前線に立つ22名が、一緒のテーブルでごはんを食べている。それがアジア学院です。
西日本研修の学生たちの話に触れ、遠く離れた国の課題を自分ごととして感じてくださる方々にとって、寄付は単に私たちを支えてくださる手段であるだけではなく、支援してくださるご自身が世界と新しく出会う機会でもあるのだと、私たちは感じています。

寄付キャンペーン「隣人とやさしく生きる」について
アジア学院の学生たち（農村コミュニティリーダー）が、教室を飛び出して広島・水俣・関西などを12日間にわたり巡り、平和、公害、多文化共生、有機農業などを現場から直接学ぶ「西日本研修」。彼らが自国に持ち帰り、地域社会に変化をもたらすための非常に重要なプログラムですが、昨今の物価高騰などの影響により、研修を継続・充実させるための資金が不足しています。

Asian Rural Institute Crowdfunding Surpasses ¥1.91 Million in Its First Week ― Marking the Anniversary of the Nagasaki Bombing with a Graduate's Story of Peace, and Words from the Former Chairman of the Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation
With gratitude to our 130 supporters. To mark the anniversaries of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings on August 6th and 9th, we share two stories of the "baton of peace" carried forward by our Western Japan Study Tour.
The Asian Rural Institute (ARI, Nasushiobara City, Tochigi Prefecture; Representative: Toshimasa Yamamoto) launched its "Living Kindly with Neighbors" crowdfunding campaign on Saturday, August 1, 2026. One week later, as of August 9th, total donations have surpassed ¥1.91 million from 130 supporters.

Today, August 9th, marks 81 years since the atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. On August 6th, the anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing, we shared an update about Thomas Mathew, who graduated from ARI in 1988. Hearing testimonies in Hiroshima during his own Western Japan Study Tour changed the course of his life — he went on to bring hibakusha (atomic bomb survivors) to India for the first time, produce a documentary on nuclear testing, and carry the baton of peace forward into the world. At ARI's Opening Ceremony in 2023, the year we celebrated our 50th anniversary, Mr. Steven Leeper, former Chairman of the Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation, joined us as a guest and left us with these words:
"I love ARI with all my heart. I have never seen a place like this — an organization of this size that has achieved such complete self-sufficiency simply doesn't exist elsewhere. We live today in a civilization of power, but the atomic bomb taught us that violence can no longer resolve our conflicts. Unless we graduate into a civilization of love, humanity has no future. ARI embodies that graduation — it is a model unlike any other in the world."
A Peace Rooted in the Soil
ARI advocates for a "peace rooted in the soil," beginning right where we stand. Practicing peace, each of us individually, is never an easy thing. This campaign's theme is "Living Kindly with Neighbors." We believe that the only way to change the world is by changing ourselves.
When you first encounter ARI, it might feel like watching a vivid documentary in a movie theater. The diversity brought by participants from Asia and Africa, and volunteers and interns from places like the United States and Germany, along with the way our rural community leaders confront the world's social issues, all live and breathe, viscerally, within this community. But we believe ARI's real strength lies in going beyond that — whether you like it or not, it asks something of you, of your own self.
For our participants, learning changes who they are, changes the regions where they live, and that learning is passed on, changing their communities in turn. Twenty-two people standing at the very front line of the world's social challenges — sitting together at the same table, sharing a meal. That is ARI.
For those who hear the stories of our Western Japan Study Tour participants and feel the challenges of distant countries as their own, we believe that giving is not simply a means of supporting us — it is also an opportunity for our supporters to newly encounter the world themselves.
■ We are challenging ourselves with a crowdfunding campaign on "Syncable" (until September 30th)! We will continue our challenge toward the Next Goal of ¥2.2 million.
About the "Living Kindly with Neighbors" Fundraising Campaign
The "Western Japan Study Tour" takes ARI participants (rural community leaders) out of the classroom for a 12-day journey through Hiroshima, Minamata, and the Kansai region to learn firsthand about peace, pollution, multicultural coexistence, and organic farming. It is a highly important program that empowers them to bring back this knowledge to their home countries and create positive changes in their local communities. However, due to recent factors such as soaring prices, we are facing a shortage of funds to continue and enhance this training.
To overcome this challenge, we are challenging ourselves with a crowdfunding campaign starting August 1st. We also welcome "Support Funding Partners" — those willing to share their own words about ARI on a personal sub-campaign page. If you are interested, please contact us at pr@ari.ac.jp.
