アジア学院寄付キャンペーン「隣人とやさしく生きる」セカンドゴール220万円を達成 ― 最終ゴール500万円へ。キャンペーン50年続く「西日本研修」を支える人々の物語

西日本研修の実施費用を確保。その上で挑む最終ゴールの理由と、常務理事が明かす研修の知られざる歴史をあわせてお届けします。

学校法人アジア学院（所在地：栃木県那須塩原市、代表：山本俊正）が2026年8月1日（土）に開始したクラウドファンディング「隣人とやさしく生きる」は、開始からわずか12日でセカンドゴール220万円を達成しました。これを受け、キャンペーン最後の挑戦として、最終ゴール500万円を新たに掲げます。

当初の目標であった西日本研修の交通費100万円を開始初日に達成し、さらに宿泊費・食費・研修費を含むセカンドゴール220万円も、わずか12日で達成することができました。今回のご支援を通して、西日本研修そのものへの応援だけでなく、アジア学院が目指す社会や学びに共感してくださる方が多くいらっしゃることを、私たちは改めて実感しました。キャンペーン開始後、また達成後も、サポートファンディングパートナーの皆さまをはじめ、サポーターの声や応援メッセージを通して、ご自身の言葉でアジア学院のことを語ってくださる方が日を追うごとに増えており、新たな方々へアジア学院の活動を届ける機会が生まれています。

そこで、今回のキャンペーン最後の挑戦として、最終ゴール500万円を掲げることにしました。

セカンドゴール220万円を達成することができた時点で、キャンペーンを終了するという選択肢もありました。しかし、このキャンペーンを始めた根本的な理由は、アジア学院全体の財政状況にあります。2025年度事業報告でご案内したとおり、現在のアジア学院の財政状況は大変に厳しいものであり、昨今の円安、物価高などの影響で、今期の運営はさらに深刻な状況となりました。

今年の学生たちが卒業するまで残り約3.5か月。残りの研修を修了するまでに必要な資金の内、食費に相当する280万円を、追加でご支援いただけないかと願います。この経済状況はアジア学院だけでなく、ご支援いただいている皆様も同様であることは理解しております。しかし、学生たちが安心して学びを続けられる環境を守るため、ここまで支えてくださった皆さまへの感謝を胸に、もう一歩のご支援をお願いする次第です。

西日本研修を支えてきた人々 ― 常務理事が明かす一例 

「なぜ西日本研修は、これほどまでに大切にされてきたのか」。今回のキャンペーンにあわせ、常務理事・荒川朋子は支援者へ向けて、研修の歴史を自らの言葉で綴りました。その一例をご紹介します。

最初の宿泊地である静岡県浜松市では、聖隷グループを訪問します。きっかけは、アジア学院創立者・高見敏弘牧師が、聖隷創設者の長谷川保氏にアジア学院設立のための支援を依頼したことにあると言われています。

長谷川氏は高見牧師に「アジア学院ができた暁には、研修で協力を惜しまない」と約束し、それ以来、病院、看護短大、こども園・中学・高校、福祉施設、遠州栄光教会など、聖隷に関係する多くの人々がホストファミリーとして学生を迎えてきました。かつてのホストファミリーの中には、長い年月を経てアジア学院の職員になった方もいます。

みかんの産地として知られるこの地域では、山中忍さんのみかん畑を必ず訪れ、学生たちが自由にみかんを採らせてもらうのが恒例となっています。

大阪でのフィールドスタディーとホームステイは、開始当初より大阪YMCAが協力しています。大阪YMCA職員だった方が、1980年代に東京YMCA同盟で若手職員研修を担当していた際にアジア学院でのYMCA職員研修を立ち上げ、大阪帰任後も両団体の結びつきを育ててきました。ホームステイはコロナ禍で一時中断しましたが、2024年に再開しています。

三つ目の訪問地・熊本県水俣では、現在のカウンターパート「からたち」の源流である水俣袋地区反農薬生産者連合（反農連）の大澤忠夫・つた子夫妻とその会が1980年代から協力を続け、現在は娘の菜穂子さんが二代にわたり研修受け入れの中心を担っています。学生数が4名まで減ったコロナ禍の時期も、水俣は受け入れを継続しました。

これに加え、広島の原爆資料館も欠かすことのできない訪問地です。南インド出身の卒業生トーマス・マシュー氏は、広島訪問をきっかけにインドでの核兵器廃絶活動と平和運動を始めました。訪問地は時代とともに変化し、四国の自然農法家・福岡正信氏の農場を訪れたこともあります。現在は三重県の愛農学園農業高校を毎年訪問し、双方向の交流が続いています。

荒川は「この旅こそ、日本人が体験すべき旅だと感じています。日本のもう一つの姿、忘れてはならない歴史、心に刻むべき人々に出会う旅なのです」と綴っています。

世界中が分断と争いに揺れる今だからこそ、「隣人とやさしく生きるリーダー」が育ってほしい。そして、アジア学院を支えていただくことが、皆さま自身にとって世界を変える一つの手立てとなればと願っています。

Asian Rural Institute Crowdfunding Reaches Its Second Goal of ¥2,200,000 ― Toward a Final Goal of ¥5,000,000. The Story of the People Who Have Supported the "Western Japan Study Tour" for 50 Years

Funding for the Western Japan Study Tour itself is already secured. Here is why we're taking on a Final Goal — together with the untold history of the tour, shared by our Managing Director.

The Asian Rural Institute (ARI, Nasushiobara City, Tochigi Prefecture) launched its "Living Kindly with Neighbors" crowdfunding campaign on Saturday, August 1, 2026. In just 12 days, the campaign reached its Second Goal of ¥2,200,000. In response, ARI is now setting a new Final Goal of ¥5,000,000 as the campaign's last challenge.

We reached our original goal of ¥1,000,000 for travel costs on day one, and in just 12 days also achieved our Second Goal of ¥2,200,000, covering accommodation, meals, and program costs. This support showed us how many people resonate not only with the tour itself, but with the society and learning ARI strives for. Since then, more supporters — including our support-funding partners — have shared their own words about ARI, reaching people who hadn't encountered us before.

And so, as the final challenge of this campaign, we have decided to set a Final Goal of ¥5,000,000.

We could have ended the campaign at the Second Goal. However, the fundamental reason we began this campaign lies in ARI's overall financial situation. As shared in our FY2025 business report, ARI's finances are extremely difficult, and recent yen depreciation and rising prices have made this term's operations even more serious.

With about three and a half months remaining until this year's participants graduate, we are asking for an additional ¥2,800,000 — the portion of remaining costs equivalent to food expenses. We understand this economic situation affects our supporters too. Still, to protect an environment where participants can keep learning with peace of mind, and with gratitude for all who have supported us this far, we ask for one more step of support.

The People Who Have Supported the Western Japan Study Tour ― A History, in the Managing Director's Own Words

"Why has this tour been treasured so deeply?" Alongside this campaign, Managing Director Tomoko Arakawa wrote to supporters about its history, in her own words. Here is part of what she shared, centered on the regions ARI has visited since the program began.

Our first stay, in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka, is with the Seirei Group — a bond that began when ARI's founder, Rev. Toshihiro Takami, asked Seirei's founder, Mr. Tamotsu Hasegawa, for support in establishing ARI. Hasegawa promised, "Once ARI is established, I will spare no effort in supporting your study tours." Since then, people from Seirei's hospital, nursing college, preschool, schools, welfare facilities, and Enshu Eiko Church have hosted participants as families. Arakawa notes "one of the host family later became ARI staff." The region, known for mandarin oranges, always includes a visit to Mr. Yamanaka's orchard, where participants pick as many as they like.

Our Osaka field study and homestays have been supported by Osaka YMCA since the tour began. An Osaka YMCA staff member, launched ARI's YMCA staff training in the 1980s while at the National Council of YMCAs of Japan, and kept nurturing this bond after returning to Osaka. Homestays paused during the pandemic but resumed in 2024.

In Minamata, Kumamoto, our third destination, Mr. Tadao and Ms. Tsutako Osawa of the Minamata Fukuro District Anti-Pesticide Farmers Association — the roots of our partner, Karatachi — have supported us since the 1980s, now carried on by their daughter, Ms. Nahoko Osawa. Even when numbers dropped to four during the pandemic, Minamata kept welcoming us.

The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum is another essential stop; visiting it led graduate Thomas Mathew, from South India, to begin nuclear abolition activism at home. Destinations have evolved, once including natural farming pioneer Masanobu Fukuoka's farm in Shikoku. Today we visit Aino Gakuen Agricultural High School in Mie every year, in a two-way exchange.

Arakawa writes, "I have long felt that this trip is precisely the kind of journey that Japanese people themselves should experience — a journey to encounter another side of Japan, a history that must not be forgotten, and people who should be remembered for a lifetime."

Precisely because the world today is shaken by division and conflict, we want to nurture leaders who can live kindly with their neighbors — and we hope that supporting ARI can become, for you, one way to help change the world.

The "Western Japan Study Tour" takes ARI participants (rural community leaders) out of the classroom for a 12-day journey through Hiroshima, Minamata, and the Kansai region to learn firsthand about peace, pollution, multicultural coexistence, and organic farming.
