Shelltas、Asia-Pacific Agri-Food Innovation Summit 2026にFeatured Start-Upとして参加

Shelltas

Shelltas Selected as a Featured Start-Up at the Asia-Pacific Agri-Food Innovation Summit 2026

SeaFect® for climate-resilient food production and circular food systems

Shelltas Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Ota City, Tokyo; Representative Director: Hirokazu Tokuda) will participate as a Featured Start-Up at the Asia-Pacific Agri-Food Innovation Summit 2026 in Singapore from October 27 to 29, 2026.

The Summit is a major event of Singapore International Agri-Food Week, bringing together agrifood companies, research institutions, start-ups, investors, and policymakers. The 2026 start-up program includes Climate-Smart Food, High-Impact Crops, and Upcycling Biomass.

Shelltas will present SeaFect®, a calcium material made from Hokkaido scallop shells, together with agricultural field and research insights accumulated in Japan.

Building Climate-Resilient Crop Production

For approximately four years, Shelltas has used SeaFect® across crops including tomatoes, cucumbers, sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, and cabbage.

Rather than adding a single function to a crop, Shelltas aims to improve the growing environment itself—including water, soil, minerals, and microbial conditions—to support stable food production as climate conditions change. Field observations are now being developed into verifiable data through comparative trials and collaborative research.

From Sweet Potato Basal Rot Observations to Further Research

One research theme receiving particular attention is sweet potato basal rot, a fungal disease that can cause plant decline, tuber rot, and major yield losses.

At a field site in Japan, infected plants were removed after basal rot was identified and SeaFect® was applied; no further spread was observed through harvest. Separate third-party tests also produced results suggesting a relationship between SeaFect® and mold growth. Shelltas plans further studies on reproducibility and mechanisms of action.

SeaFect® is not registered as a pesticide and is not marketed or claimed to control any specific plant disease, including sweet potato basal rot.

From Scallop Shells to Future Food Production

SeaFect® is made from Hokkaido scallop shells. Shelltas uses proprietary processing technology to upcycle fisheries by-products into high-performance calcium materials for agriculture, aquaculture, and other food-production applications.

As a Featured Start-Up, Shelltas will present SeaFect® and its agricultural insights while seeking collaboration with overseas companies, research institutions, and investors. Meetings with organizations interested in research, validation trials, and business partnerships are also planned.

Comment from Hirokazu Tokuda, Representative Director of Shelltas Co., Ltd.

“Climate change is rapidly transforming agriculture and food production. We believe food-production systems must remain stable even as growing environments change.

Our goal is to improve soil, root-zone, and water environments to help bring out plants’ natural ability to grow and adapt. We want to connect field observations to scientific validation while turning scallop shells from Japan’s fisheries industry into new agricultural technologies.

We hope this opportunity in Singapore will help expand knowledge developed in Japan into food production around the world.”
