Shelltas Achieves Scallop and Abalone Co-Cultivation in Land-Based Aquaculture Using Artificial Seawater
Shelltas Co., Ltd., a Japanese materials and water-environment tech company, announces successful co-cultivation of scallops and abalone in the same fully closed land-based aquaculture tank in its in-house lab, using proprietary artificial seawater developed from naturally derived ingredients. The company maintained scallops for approximately seven months without seawater exchange and observed their growth. The system combines SeaFect®, a marine-derived calcium material made from Hokkaido scallop shells, with Water OS®, its water environment management technology.
As warming oceans challenge seafood production worldwide, Shelltas aims to develop aquaculture infrastructure that is less dependent on coastal locations. A larger-scale demonstration has now been confirmed in Akihabara, central Tokyo.
Climate Change Is Reshaping Aquaculture Worldwide
In Japan's Mutsu Bay, Aomori Prefecture, elevated seawater temperatures have contributed to scallop mortality and shortages of juvenile scallops, and initiatives are also under way to temporarily rear juveniles in land-based tanks ("intermediate rearing") to avoid summer heat. Marine heatwaves and warming oceans are affecting aquatic environments globally, increasing the need for resilient seafood production methods.
Engineering Water Environments with Water OS®
Water OS® is a water environment management technology developed by Shelltas. Using SeaFect®, it focuses on mineral balance and microbial activity to create and maintain aquatic environments. In this in-house lab trial, no natural seawater was used. Instead, Shelltas used artificial seawater developed from naturally derived ingredients. Without UV sterilization or ozone treatment, scallops were maintained for approximately seven months without seawater exchange, with growth observed. Trial conditions: 13–15°C water temperature, approximately 33‰ salinity, and pH 8.1–8.4.

Successful Scallop and Abalone Co-Cultivation in One Tank
The trial goes beyond scallops alone. Shelltas has also successfully maintained scallops and abalone together in the same fully closed tank. Rearing two shellfish species in a shared aquatic environment is an important step toward future multi-species production systems. The company also plans to explore combinations involving fish, seaweed, and microalgae.

From Coastal Farms to Central Tokyo: Next Stop, Akihabara
Conventional land-based aquaculture can face location constraints related to seawater access and wastewater treatment. Shelltas aims to enable seafood production in compact urban spaces far from the coast. Building on its scallop trial and scallop–abalone co-cultivation results, the company has confirmed a larger-scale demonstration in Akihabara, Tokyo.
Alongside climate adaptation, meeting global demand for sustainable protein is a major challenge. “A world where seafood can be grown without being near the sea.” Through the Akihabara demonstration, Shelltas aims to advance technology that could eventually enable closed-environment aquaculture in inland cities and other locations worldwide. Further details will be announced separately.
Comment from Hirokazu Tokuda, CEO of Shelltas
“Our technology begins with scallop shells. Through conversations with scallop fishermen, I have heard firsthand that scallops are becoming harder to catch. We began this research because we wanted to help break that negative cycle. Scallops are considered difficult to farm on land, and that is precisely why I wanted to take on the challenge. After much trial and error, I am delighted that we have maintained scallops in a fully closed system for approximately seven months, observed their growth, and also achieved co-cultivation with abalone. We will continue developing this technology to help address challenges facing aquaculture not only in Japan, but around the world.”
