TOWING、海外で「宙炭」供給へ。米国子会社とタイ製造拠点を設立

〜海外での製造体制整備により、サステナブルな食料生産システム構築をグローバルで加速〜

株式会社TOWING（本社：愛知県名古屋市、代表取締役CEO：西田 宏平、以下「TOWING」）は、高機能バイオ炭「宙炭（そらたん）」のグローバル展開を加速するため、北米およびタイに現地法人を設立いたしました。

北米拠点は、現地での「宙炭」生産を視野に、米国における市場調査およびパートナー開拓を目的に設立しました。タイ拠点は、大手食品企業とのバイオ炭を用いた土壌改良と炭素貯留プロジェクト等を更に推進すべく、同国Saraburi県において「宙炭」の製造拠点を設置しました。

これにより、日本・米国・タイの3拠点での「宙炭」の供給インフラを確立し、グローバルで炭素固定と土壌再生を本格化させ、サステナブルな食料生産システムの構築を加速します。

1.  米国：世界最大の環境・農業市場への参入

米国は世界の食料庫と称され、有数の農業国であると同時に、カーボンクレジット等の環境市場における先進地です。TOWINGはこれまで、北米のバイオ炭市場の特性把握、実証の積み上げと並行して現地でのネットワーク構築に注力してまいりました。2023年末には北米での調査を開始し、翌2024年2月にはサクラメントで開催された「2024 North American Biochar Conference」に参加。同年3月にカリフォルニア州に研究ラボを立ち上げました。さらに同年中には、兼松株式会社の米国関係会社であるKG Agri Products, Inc.が保有するオハイオ州の圃場において「宙炭」の導入試験に着手し、翌25年には米国大手食品加工会社との実証を開始するなど、着実に事業展開の準備を進めてきました。

この度設立した現地法人を通じて、北米市場特有のニーズ、気候、作物、および農地特性を精査し、最適な「宙炭」やバイオ炭ベースの資材の供給モデルを構築します。今後は、現地での生産・流通を共に行う事業パートナーの選定を進め、広大な北米での社会実装を推進します。

2. タイ王国：社会課題解決に向けた「宙炭」の現地供給と実証

タイは東南アジア有数の農業大国であり、グローバルな農業サプライチェーンのハブです。

現在、野焼きによるPM2.5の発生が深刻な社会問題となっており、政府主導で野焼きの禁止と農業残渣の利活用が推進されています。また、同国はBio Circular Green（BCG）政策を進めており、バイオ技術等を用いた産業を推進しております。こうした背景から、両課題の解決につながるバイオ炭は、非常に注目されており、さらに、バイオ炭を活用したカーボンクレジット（T-VER等）の創出は、農家の新たな副収入源として大きな期待が寄せられています。

TOWINGは、2024年11月のカセサート大学とのMOUに基づき同大学内の圃場にて「宙炭」を用いた工業作物の実証栽培を翌2025年から実施しました。同時に、グローバルおよびタイローカルの様々な食品企業との連携によりタイ国内の複数の圃場にて輸出用果菜類や商業作物における効果を検証し、東南アジア特有の気候下での有効性を確認しました。これらの実証等のために、令和5年度補正の経済産業省「グローバルサウス未来志向型共創等事業費補助金」にも採択をいただいております。

さらに、同年10月には、タイのセメント最大手であるSCG Cement Co., Ltd.と連携協定を締結しました。この強力なパートナーシップを背景に     高機能バイオ炭「宙炭」を製造する体制を確立。タイにおいて原料調達から製造までの一貫したサプライチェーンを構築しました。

今後は、商業的な製造とカーボン価値創出スキームの整備を推進し、「宙炭」の普及を通じて、タイの農業課題および環境課題の解決に寄与してまいります。

TOWING Launches U.S. and Thailand Operations to Scale High-Performance Biochar “SORATAN” Globally

Establishing a tri-regional biochar supply network to accelerate sustainable food systems

TOWING Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Nagoya, Aichi JAPAN; Representative Director and CEO: Kohei Nishida; hereinafter “TOWING”), spun out of Nagoya University and a green agritech startup, has established local subsidiaries in North America and Thailand to accelerate the global rollout of its high-performance biochar “SORATAN”.

The North American subsidiary was established to conduct market research and develop partnerships in the United States, with a view to local production of “SORATAN”. The Thai subsidiary established a “SORATAN” manufacturing base in Saraburi Province to further advance soil improvement and carbon storage projects using biochar in collaboration with major food companies.

With these moves, TOWING establishes a “SORATAN” supply infrastructure across three locations—Japan, the United States, and Thailand—accelerating carbon sequestration and soil regeneration on a global scale and advancing the development of sustainable food production systems.

1. United States: Entering the World’s Largest Environmental & Agricultural Market

The United States is one of the world’s largest agricultural producers and a frontrunner in environmental markets such as carbon credits. TOWING has focused on understanding the characteristics of the North American biochar market, building a track record of field demonstrations, and developing a local network in parallel. The company began its North American research at the end of 2023, and in February 2024 participated in the “2024 North American Biochar Conference” held in Sacramento. In March of the same year, it established a research lab in California. Later that year, TOWING began field trials of “SORATAN” at farmland in Ohio owned by KG Agri Products, Inc., a U.S. affiliate of Kanematsu Corporation, and in 2025 launched a demonstration project with a major U.S. food processing company—steadily preparing for full business deployment.

Through the newly established local subsidiary, TOWING will analyze the specific needs, climate, crops, and farmland characteristics of the North American market to build an optimal supply model for “SORATAN” and biochar-based materials. Going forward, the company will select business partners for local production and distribution to accelerate commercial deployment across the vast North American region.

2. Thailand: Local Supply & Demonstration of “SORATAN” for Social Challenges

Thailand is one of Southeast Asia’s leading agricultural nations and a hub of the global agricultural supply chain. Currently, PM2.5 pollution from open-field burning has become a serious social issue, and the government is leading efforts to ban such burning and promote the utilization of agricultural residues. Thailand is also advancing its Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) policy, which promotes industries leveraging biotechnology. Against this backdrop, biochar—which can help address both challenges—is attracting significant attention. Additionally, the creation of carbon credits using biochar (such as T-VER) is generating strong expectations as a new supplementary income source for farmers.

Based on the MOU signed with Kasetsart University in November 2024, TOWING began demonstration cultivation of industrial crops using “SORATAN” at the university’s farmland from 2025. In parallel, in collaboration with various global and local Thai food companies, the company verified effectiveness on export-bound fruit/vegetable crops and commercial crops at multiple farmlands in Thailand, confirming efficacy under Southeast Asia’s distinctive climate. These demonstrations were also adopted under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s “Global South Future-Oriented Co-creation Subsidy” (FY2023 supplementary budget).

Furthermore, in October of the same year, TOWING signed a collaboration agreement with SCG Cement Co., Ltd., Thailand’s largest cement manufacturer. Building on this strong partnership, the company has established a system to manufacture high-performance biochar “SORATAN” building an integrated supply chain in Thailand from raw material procurement through manufacturing.

Going forward, TOWING will promote commercial production and the development of carbon value creation schemes, contributing to the resolution of Thailand’s agricultural and environmental challenges through the adoption of “SORATAN”.
